When the disks are full, it’s time to clean up. But it is easier said than done. Of course, you can use the Windows Disk Cleanup utility, which may free up a few gigabytes. But what if you have to free up a few hundred gigabytes?
The disk space analyzer provides a visual representation of the size of each directory. This makes it easier to detect disk space consumption and remove unwanted items.
There are many such utilities, and they all do essentially the same thing. But since visual presentation is the main difference between them, images will help you decide what you like the most. Check out some of the best disk space analysis tools for Windows 10.
This program has a very simple interface and visual style. Clean graphics make it easier to read directory names.
Another advantage is that you have a portable version to download. The portable application can be downloaded and used without installation on the system. This means you can also put it in a USB drive, carry it with you, and use it on any computer you use.
In the top menu bar, you can increase or decrease the level of detail. But you can also do it with individual items instead of doing it globally. For example, with a few clicks on “steamapps,” as shown in the image above, you can reveal the folders inside.
You can also double-click a directory that contains too many items. This zooms in on that directory, taking it to the entire main window. Because the graphics are larger, the text labels are less cluttered, making things easier to read.
You can select a tree view instead of the tiled view in the previous utility. WinDirStat combines the two views as a hybrid that looks like the following image.
When you click on a box in the sophisticated graphical view at the bottom, you are automatically redirected to the corresponding directory in the tree view. You can see it from the previous picture. And because the tree automatically sorts directories from largest to smallest, it’s easy to navigate until you find large folders and files you don’t need.
One useful feature is in the upper right corner of the main window. For example, if you are looking for MP3 files, you can click on the extensions in this list. This will highlight all files in the lower tiled view. Probably because of this feature, the program takes a little longer to scan the disks for the first time. SpaceSniffer was significantly faster in this regard.
3. HD graphics
A rarer disk space analyzer / viewer is one that draws directories like the one below.
Depending on how you think and look at things, it can give you a clearer picture or make things more confusing. Everything depends on preferences.
You won’t find many features HD graphics. If you’re a minimalist, you’ll love comfort that doesn’t exist in bulk and complexity. However, if you need more features, use one of the first two programs instead. The functionality can be summarized in a few words. The tool draws directories in concentric circles. To center the chart, right-click and select another directory. You can change the scan depth, view the properties of the directory and its parts, or open File Explorer in the directory.
Just like the first program on this list, you will find a portable version of the app.
4. Windows storage settings
Although it started as an orientation application only, the Windows Disk Space Analyzer has evolved to the point where it deserves to be mentioned in this list. Press to open it Win , enter “storage” and open the “Storage settings” application. After selecting the desired disc, a window similar to the following image will appear.
Depending on the part of disk space usage you are analyzing, you can now perform the necessary actions from this application. If you’re looking at temporary files, you can clean up unnecessary ones: old Windows updates, the Recycle Bin, temporary program files, error logs, and more. Under “System and Busy,” you can change the use of System Restore, which can become quite large on very large hard disks / SSDs.
This utility provides a good way to manage the disk space used by the operating system or its components. However, it is as far as its functionality extends. You cannot analyze the disk space used by random directories on your disk.

Anyway, if you need anything else, you can just install one of the first three applications and use them with the built-in tool in Windows.
