The Pixel 6 could carry the Ultra Wideband (UWB), or Ultra Large Bande in French. This technology, present on the latest iPhones and the S21 + and S21 Ultra, makes it possible to locate a smartphone or a connected object with great precision. The AirTag, Apple’s Bluetooth beacon, is also based largely on the UWB.

According to the documents consulted by our colleagues at 9To5Google, Google is currently experimenting with the integration of Ultra Wideband technology into its smartphones. Ultra Wide Band could land on the Pixel 6, the next flagships of the Californian brand, says the media.

Mishaal Rahman, editor-in-chief of XDA Developers, agrees in a post on Twitter. “Google is testing Android 12 Ultra-Wideband (UWB) API support on ‘Raven’, one of the codenames that could evoke next-gen Pixels” assures the journalist, evoking straightforwardly the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 XL.

What if Google launched an alternative to AirTags?

The Ultra Wideband is present on the iPhone since the iPhone 11. More recently, Samsung has integrated this technology on the Galaxy S21 + and S21 Ultra. The standard S21, on the other hand, ignores the UWB. Called to spread to all smartphones on the market, Ultra Wide Band makes it possible in particular to locate a phone with extreme precision, benefit from additional services via the Internet of Things (IoT) and transfer files quickly from one device to another, even faster than with Bluetooth.

For example, it is thanks to UWB connectivity that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are able to locate AirTags, the Bluetooth beacons developed by Apple, with impressive precision. Via a dedicated app, the user can locate the tracker to the nearest meter. Does Google aim to launch alternatives to AirTags in the years to come ? On Twitter, Mishaal Rahman raises the idea but specifies that nothing yet confirms it.

Obviously, Google is still at the experimental stage. It is not impossible that the Mountain View giant will eventually end up postponing the integration of the technology on the terminals in its catalog. Anyway, Pixel 6 are not expected until next fall.
