MacBook Air 2021: features, price, release date
Apple made some drastic changes when launching the new MacBook Air in 2018, but other than the processor and keyboard, there haven’t been any major improvements since. But if the latest rumors are to be believed, that could change this year, as Apple prepared to launch a drastic overhaul of its cheapest laptop. Here’s everything we heard about the new MacBook Air 2021 and its features.
MacBook Air 2021: the latest rumors of its specifications
According to Dylan, an iOS developer Twitter user, the MacBook Air will get M2 chip rather than the much-talked-about M1X chip, which he says is “only for Mac Pro devices”.
Supply chain reports suggest Apple is focusing on delivering the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros in 2021, but rumors have dried up about a new MacBook Air. It is therefore possible that the release date could slide to 2022.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the “redesigned high-end MacBook Air” will have a new system on chip (SoC) that replaces the M1. The new SoC will be faster, but will have eight processor cores (four performance cores, four efficiency cores) like the M1. Graphics cores will go from seven or eight to nine or ten.
In a previous report, Serial leaker Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech heard from “different sources” that Apple will release new laptops in different colors similar to that of the new 24-inch iMac. Prosser reports that the keyboard will have full-size function keys, a smaller trackpad, and two USB-C ports. Prosser didn’t report the size of the new laptop, but it will likely still be 13 inches.
MacBook Air: name and price
We assume, for this article, that Apple will stick to the name MacBook Air for the next revision, but Prosser noted that his sources have not confirmed this. So it’s possible that Apple will reintroduce the MacBook, which was discontinued in 2019 and recently made vintage by Apple. Apple sold the Air alongside the MacBook Air for a short time, so it’s also possible that the current Air will get a price cut to make room for the new model at the level of. $ 999 (i.e. € 1,129 if we follow the Current MacBook Air on the French site and English) or remains the same as a cheaper option for a more expensive MacBook.
It has been reported for months that Apple is working on a lighter, thinner redesign for the MacBook Air. More recently, serial leaker Jon Prosser reported on his YouTube channel, Front Page Tech, that the new MacBook Air has moved to a flat design rather than the classic tapered look, but still retain its incredible slimness. It could also have full-size function keys, which would make the trackpad slightly smaller.
Apple will make several colors for the MacBook Air, according to Prosser, probably in hues corresponding to the new iMac, so green, blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple and silver. Prosser also reports that the front face, the frame, will be thinner and turn from black to white while the underside will gain two rubber bands instead of the standard circular feet.
MacBook Air: display
The MacBook Air 2021 will likely have the same 13.3-inch retina display as the current model. According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple has considered a larger 15-inch screen for the MacBook Air, but Apple has decided to put that model aside for now. However, even if the new MacBook Air stays with the same screen size, it could still get an upgrade. The Mini LED could come for the MacBook Air, but that probably won’t happen until 2022, with a debut in the MacBook Pro later this year. As seen in the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the mini LED is backlighting technology for displays, but as the name suggests, uses a higher concentration of smaller LEDs. This results in better backlight control, better image contrast, and greater dynamic range.
MacBook Air 2021: MagSafe and ports, their characteristics
The new MacBook Air, which could be released later this year or early 2022, could make the return of the MagSafe connector, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. MagSafe is a magnetic power adapter connector that can easily be disconnected from the laptop using non-axial force, which was introduced in 2006. Its implementation meant that if someone pulled or tripped over the cable, the connection would break, but the laptop would not fly off the work surface. Apple retired the MagSafe when it switched to USB-C connectors in 2016, which don’t have a detachable connector.
Apple has reintroduced the MagSafe brand as a magnetic charging system for the iPhone 12 and the new iMac to a magnetic power cord that does not have the MagSafe brand. Presumably, any technology related to MagSafe for Apple laptops would be in the same vein as its implementation from 2006, but will likely still use USB-C for charging.
When it comes to connectivity ports, Apple has made the switch to Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports in its M1 Macs, and it’s a safe bet that Apple will continue with that in the new MacBook Air. The question then becomes how many ports. Traditionally, the MacBook Air has two ports on one side. In his report on color offerings for a new MacBook Air or MacBook, Jon Prosser said the new laptop will have two ports, but with better placement: one on each side rather than both on the left edge.
MacBook Air: processor and memory
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that at the end of 2021, we may see a new MacBook Air with a new System on a Chip (SoC) that replaces the M1. The new SoC will be faster, but will have eight processor cores (four performance cores, four efficiency cores) like the M1. Graphics cores will go from seven or eight to nine or ten. Although it was originally assumed that the chip would be the same M1X chip as rumored for the MacBook Pro, a rumor from Twitter user @dylandkt says the MacBook Air could use the next-gen M2 chip instead.
Apple released the current MacBook in November of 2020, so it’s likely that a new model will arrive around the same time. Prosser said he expected the MacBook Air to be near “the end of 2021” and Bloomberg reported that it is expected to arrive in the “second half of this year at the earliestThe two have suggested that the new MacBook Air could also slide in early 2022 and a report from Twitter user @dylandkt also says that the new laptop will not arrive not before 2022. Recently, rumors have suggested that Apple may prioritize the redesigned MacBook Pro models, so it’s more likely that the MacBook Air won’t launch until next year.
