“AirDrop Windows”: share a document with a nearby device

Although the term “AirDrop” is somewhat wrong since we are talking about a feature in Windows 10, the idea is to share documents with a nearby device. Just like the functionality present in the Apple ecosystem, it is possible to send documents, photos, videos, or even links to websites. This proximity sharing, or Nearby Sharing, is done wirelessly since the data passes through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

In this tip, we’ll see how to enable this sharing and how to use it for different types of documents. It should be noted that the activation must be done on the source and target machines.

Activate and configure proximity sharing

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System
  2. On the right, click Shared experiences
  3. On the left, activate the Proximity sharing :

Note that it is possible to enable sharing for all nearby PCs (by default) or only for your computers (My devices only). In the case of the default choice, the address and name of your Bluetooth PC are made available to other devices around you.
Likewise, it is possible to modify the location where the files received from another device will be saved.

Now that the functionality is configured, you can activate or deactivate it at any time in the notification center:

Enabling or disabling proximity sharing in the notification center

A first click will enable activation, a second will deactivate it.

Share your documents to your computers

Now that the feature is enabled, it is possible to share your documents and other files very easily. If the easiest sharing method is through the explorer, it is also possible to go through specific software that offers the functionality.

Sharing by Windows Explorer

This is the easiest way to share any type of document. Whether it’s an image, video, Word, Excel or PDF file, you can share everything with your nearby computers. Note that it is not possible to share a folder. You will either have to compress it into a single archive, or share its content file after file.

  1. In the explorer, right click on a file then select Share :
  2. In the sharing window that opens, your nearby PCs will be detected. Choose the computer you want to send the file to.
  3. On the chosen computer, a notification will appear which will allow you to save the file by clicking on Record.

Share an image from the Photos app

The principle of sharing is identical from the Photos application in Windows 10. To open an image with it, all you have to do is right click on your image then select Edit with Photos from the context menu.

In the top bar of the application, select the icon Share. From there, the procedure is identical to what we described in the explorer: you choose the machine of your choice in order to send the image there.

Share a link from Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge browser integrates link sharing functionality. Just click on Settings and more (the three small dots at the top right) or use the key combination Alt + F. In the menu, then select the option Share. As for the rest, the sharing option will allow you to send the site to the PC of your choice.

On the target PC, a notification will appear. One click on the button To open will launch the browser with the shared website.
