Windows 11 will be available faster than you might think, with a likely release sometime in October 2021, but Insiders are likely to get it much sooner.

Microsoft has just announced that Windows 11 will be the next successor to Windows 10 (which according to Microsoft, we remember, was the last version of Windows…). But, when can you get it and do you need to upgrade?

There are probably various answers. Here’s why.

Windows Insider

Microsoft has announced that starting the week of June 28, a first version of Windows 11 will be made available with the Windows Insider program.

As expected, the release will first air on the Windows Insider Dev Channel. Later, it will move to beta and finally to Release Preview sometime in the fall.

There will be exceptions as to which PCs can take advantage of Windows 11 Insider Dev Channel, as Microsoft notes:

All Windows Insiders who have already installed Dev Channel builds on their PC until June 24, 2021 will be allowed to continue installing Windows 11 Insider Preview builds even if their PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements.

In preparation for the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview builds to the Beta Channel later this summer, we’re moving PCs that don’t meet Windows 11 hardware requirements in the Beta Channel to the Release Preview Channel. Some of these PCs may be able to return to the beta channel, but at their own risk. See the table above for more details.

In other words, there are a lot of caveats, so be sure to read the full post from microsoft detailing how the Insider program works.

For all users: Windows 11 (General Release): October 6, 2021?

Windows 11 Update is a free upgrade for all Windows 10 users and is optional.

No definitive date has been given for the release of Windows 11, but October is a good guess (and it was even spotted in the Windows 11 presentation). Indeed, October 6 (Wednesday) could be the official launch day, but no date has not been confirmed by Microsoft.

Windows 11 will be available through a free upgrade for qualifying Windows 10 PCs and on newer PCs. To check if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11, download the Microsoft app PC Health Check. under the title Check the compatibility.

Windows 11 …

Windows 11 will be one of the biggest evolutions of Windows for over ten years. While the recent preview leak gives a good look at what we can expect, there are still plenty of questions and details unknown. These will be revealed in the coming weeks and months, when Microsoft officially unveils the operating system, which we’ll cover in great detail here.
