Windows 10 deleted items are missing from the Recycle Bin

Files deleted in Windows 10 are moved to the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin is a separate place where deleted items reside. They remain there until the user decides to empty the tank. Files are not deleted automatically. They can be selectively removed from the Recycle Bin and returned at any time.

Deleted items in Windows 10 are not in the Recycle Bin

When you delete a file, it moves to the Trash. This is how file deletion works in Windows 10 and all older versions of Windows (98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 / 8.1). The behavior has not changed over the years, but there are a few exceptions to this.

Deleted files will not be sent to the Recycle Bin if any of the following conditions are true.

  • The user deleted the file by pressing Shift + Delete.
  • Access deleted the file from the command line.
  • The deleted file was unusually large and could not fit in the Recycle Bin.
  • The file was deleted from a flash storage device, such as an SD card.
  • The Recycle Bin was full when the file was deleted.

1. Recover the deleted file

If you have deleted some files but they are not in the Recycle Bin, there is a small chance that you will get them back. If you have not restarted the system after deleting the files, you have a better chance of restoring the file.

  1. Download Windows File Recovery Tool / From the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open Command prompt with administrator privileges.
  3. Throw it command to retrieve files you deleted.

2. Trash deleted files

Windows 10 allows users to delete files without sending them to the Recycle Bin. To start uploading files to the Trash, you need to enable it.

  1. Right-click the Recycle Bin on the desktop and select Features from the shortcut menu.

4. Reset the Recycle Bin

Your Recycle Bin may be experiencing problems and you can restore it to normal operation.

  1. Open Command prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Perform the following steps command to reset trash.
rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin

5. Check scripts and automation tasks

Many users run scripts or set up automatic tasks to regularly delete files from the Recycle Bin. This removes the burden of the task from the user, but it can be the reason why your files do not appear in the Recycle Bin. If you’ve set up an automatic script or task to manage the Recycle Bin, turn it off and try deleting the files.
